The National Wine Fair, FENAVIN's 2005, biennial event organized by the Provincial Government in Ciudad Real, has this year a very new and intelligent ingredient which can be very beneficial to the winery owners. We are talking about the Viticultural Innovation Room, an initiative showing how much FENAVIN opens out onto the research and technological innovation world in two ways.

On the one hand, there will be projects at the winery owners disposal for those who cannot find a solution to their company problems simply because they do not know who to turn to. And, on the other hand, FENAVIN is the ideal setting for the dissemination and updating of the latest scientific developments with the aim to improve the professional activity in the wine sector and make it known to the public in general.

This is what the researcher and new technologies expert, María Teresa de Cuadra, explains. She will be in charge of the Viticultural Innovation Room. De Cuadra's curriculum is very extensive and interesting and she is therefore more than prepared to be successful in this new FENAVIN endeavor. This room will be the novelty for this third FENAVIN which will take place in Ciudad Real Trade Show Center from 9th to 12th of May 2005.

But the factor that has caught the attention of both the President and the Director of FENAVIN, Nemesio de Lara y Manuel Juliá respectively, has been her official presence in the past few years in more than 400 wine tasting events, all of them on record and authorized for scientific purposes. She has therefore to her credit an achievement few people in Spain can vouch for- except for one professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Madrid Autonomous University) as far as FENAVIN knows -.

Therefore, Feria Nacional del Vino (National Wine Fair) has trusted a prestigious expert researcher. De Cuadra thinks that the fact that FENAVIN has opted for the scientific precision, research and new technologies is paramount. This is a field which can be applied to the sector and that has to be taken into account with the objective to take advantage of its potential in all spheres of activity. She considers it is "basic" that the organization has also thought about this plan of action together with the professional, commercial and cultural ones. She states, in this respect, that FENAVIN is noticeably strengthening itself with the new Viticultural Innovation Room. This is also the opinion of the organization voiced by the President of this event.

De Lara states that these fields - research and science - are present to make the winemaker aware of what FENAVIN actually is, the National Monographic Spanish Wine Fair, a point of reference at national level.

"The Viticultural Innovation Room can be a unique opportunity for the researchers to make their projects known and establish contacts with the business sector in order to carry out an exchange of views and obtain the necessary support to continue their research work", explains María Teresa de Cuadra, who will be in charge of the room and will have the support of colleagues who are teachers at the University of Castilla - La Mancha and who has carried out a study about the initiatives which are being developed around the world in the wine sector.

THREE AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE

The main viticultural research centers in the world will show the results of their works in three areas of knowledge or sectors: viticulture, oenology and marketing-positioning. In order to select the contents to be disclosed at Feria Nacional del Vino (National Wine Fair) there has been an opinion survey carried out about which aspects or subjects were more interesting.

By putting together these three sectors, the main advantage is to make available to everyone - i.e. the 700 winemakers present at FENAVIN - the information which is capable of generating solutions to the problems they have detected in their businesses. "We are making available the innovation for the businessmen within the wine sector in order to allow them to freely chose in accordance with their needs or the deficiencies they may have detected" María Teresa de Cuadra explains.

To this end study centers have been selected all around the world. In America, mainly in Argentina, Chile, whereas in Europe, it was France, Italy, Hungary, Austria and Germany which were selected. As well as South Africa and Australia.

Regarding marketing and positioning, the third area of knowledge, the manager of the Viticultural Innovation room, explains the winery owner will have the opportunity to learn about which trade shows exist in other countries or their research centers.

Likewise, lines can be defined regarding the works under way in order to evaluate results, boost promotional campaigns, analyze where courses related to the oenology and viticulture world are being carried out and why, amongst other things. In short, professionals will have access to information which is, under normal circumstances, not readily available.

NEW RESEARCH CONCEPT

The Viticultural Innovation Room features 2 main novelties. On the one hand, it is meant to present and reveal the new research concept. And, on the other hand, present the design of the new research areas according to the selection criteria demanded by the user. De Cuadra points out that, in this respect, "we will work for the professional who will participate in the Fair". And she adds the latter will be helped in getting to know the market and how to enter it.

It is important to highlight that in the Viticultural Innovation Room within FENAVIN training to the highest standard will be included. Professionals in need of training will get information about where to go and who to talk to.

This new service offered by Feria Nacional del Vino (National Wine Fair) is undoubtedly a tool which will be highly valued by the wine makers participating in the event. Amongst other things, professionals specialized in the sector will find in the Room addresses of research center, contact telephone numbers of all the countries in the world and they will be directly put in touch with other companies within the sector.

During FENAVIN research projects of scientific precision will be presented. These are also applied proposals which have been carried out in accordance with actual needs. "The business sector is not aware of all advances which can be applied directly and immediately and solve the problems it is facing every day" states María Teresa de Cuadra before adding that the Viticultural Innovation Room tries to bring closer the winemakers and the research which can directly affect their business.

There will also be regular sessions led by the researchers who have participated in the project. They will explain the projects in a comprehensive way and answer questions which may arise during the Feria Nacional del Vino (National Wine Fair).

"WINE HAS NOT ONLY BODY BUT ALSO SOUL"

María Teresa de Cuadra, researcher and expert in new technologies will, shortly, submit her doctoral thesis to a board of examiners. Presently she is completing a study which has entailed the participation in more than 400 official wine tasting events in the past few years.

She confesses she is a wine lover. "It has not only body but also soul" says De Cuadra. This linguist and translator talks about poetry and sensitivity around a product which brings about countless sensations when the time comes to taste it. "It is art and trade" she points out.

María Teresa de Cuadra thinks the use of language is basic when it comes to making a note about the wine one is tasting as wine is known by things which are said about it in a poetic and lyric language with a high degree of emotion and feeling. "The world of wine tasting is linked to evocation, remembrance and emotion" she adds and then states the terminology must be carefully chosen and with precision in order not to create false expectations amongst the audience.

The wine tasting language has evolved as far as references as concerned. That is what María Teresa de Cuadra highlights with one of the many examples available: "we cannot say a wine smells wet hay any more because few people can locate this smell. We now say it smells like diesel"

On the other hand, she says one cannot speak about "contamination" but she states that it is necessary to take into account the fact that new information technologies through internet ease access to wine tasting events which take place in other parts of the world where another terminology is used. And one can clearly see the influence of different cultures when it comes to describing the wine properties.

For María Teresa de Cuadra, wine tasting, though having a very subjective ingredient, must be taught with an accurate and precise terminology, adjusted to the actual characteristics of the wine. "it is mostly based on creativity but within certain parameters" she points out.
